I have the exact same compute, with exactly the same problem. Seriously! I wish they had a george forman add-on.

Lol!! This is brilliant!! I swear one day I will look down at my thighs after using the laptop for too long and find they have roasted :/

I don't HP computers are the only ones. My MacBook gets pretty hot when I'm running a lot of applications. I try to refrain from keeping on my legs for too long or else I'd burn.
If your brother DOES every fry an egg on the video card, make sure you link us to the youtube vid!

Haha I was just telling my mom to get a different brand laptop because HP heats up too much today.

funny, but it's worth noting that hp and probably all other manufacturers state that notebook computers should not be used on your lap for heat and ergonomic reasons. if you do want to use it on your lap it should be placed on a hard surface such as a hardback book or tray. never on anything soft like a pillow because this will block the air vents.

I sit here at a dv9500 that I wouldn't put on my lap for more than a minute or two for exactly the same reason :)

I have a dv7 2044, and it had similar issues; they vanished with an upgrade to W7. I recall discovering at the time that this is actually an odd Vista-related driver issue; as random as that sounds. Downgrading to XP might also solve it. No idea if it's relevant and/or helpful to you.

I got my HP Compaq before college (I started in Sept 2008) and that winter i was always cold so I always had my laptop touching me bc it was so warm..I was so cold that it didn't seem THAT hot... I actually had burn marks on my legs for a few months. Dumb thing to do but after I realized what it was though I stopped keeping my laptop in my lap and all better now (:
Guess I could've sued! Oh man, I shoulda!!

I've to a HP pavilion dv5 w/ vista and when I put the battery settings on high performance or balanced, it gets hotter than Jessica Alba's lower back.

It's not only the dv series-- I had a Pavillion, too, which I considered using as a cooking device many times. Every HP laptop I've ever owned has been prone to getting hot. I am now typing this on a dv8000 where I can actually feel the heat of the innards through the keyboard. Oh, and the power brick? Don't even look at it funny or you'll lose a fingerprint. I still love HP laptops though!

Laptops don't use thermal paste. Laptops use thermal pads. Learn your ABCs prior to giving retarded advice to people.
On a side note, I am yet to see a dual core laptop that does not have heating issues. Some single core laptops did overheat, but then manufacturers just decided to stick a CPU with 2 cores in without changing a thing about cooling system. As long as it's glossy and slick - people will buy it. meh...

its black and shiny! Therefore, if I buy it, I'll be the coolest person in town!
And if my thighs look like baked ham, i could explain that my AWESOME HP laptop has a capability of over 115 degrees F!
that is my one problem with my hp. now that its spring, and soon summer, i have to put things under it because it overheats even with only a flat desk at a room temperature of 75 deg.

I have a dual-core vaio and that never overheats - I even blocked the vent by accident and apart from slowing down a bit it didn't do anything. ^^

I used some canned air and it now runs much cooler. Looks like there was just enough dust in there to mess up the performance of the fan. (This is a dv2500 / dv2940se)
