Yes, this grossly contends with Asimov's The Last Question. I feel like this compensates by giving a description of string theory that someone other than Michio Kaku understands.

You know, if you haven't already, you should probably email this to the guy who does xkcd, I'm sure he'd get a kick out of it :)

I can't stand Michio Kaku!

"So imagine the UNIVERSE is made of TINY LITTLE VIBRATING PIECES OF STRING. This causes the UNIVERSE to split up, into PARALLEL UNIVERSES. That means there are an infinite number of you in the world. In one PARALLEL UNIVERSE, you're HITLER. In another, you've got a BONER right now. In yet another, only proven science is presented on television shows. But in most, I'm still just spouting buzzwords. Also, I have cool hair."

nice catch ummm. fixed it.

that's pretty on point. i read one his books a long time and the boner universe is pretty much my main takeaway.

Without reading the title, I immediately thought of xkcd. Apparently, generic stick figures+science=Randall Monroe.

...and in the last of James Blish's classic "Cities in Flight" series ("The Triumph of Time") the hero... namely, New York, New York... locates itself at the precise spot where the old universe is giving birth to a new universe, in order to shape the new one.

I am the boner of the universe, the winds of time are flowing through me, all things are relative to me, you're all a figment of my mind, In a world that I designed, Charged with cosmic energy, Has the world gone mad or is it me.
I am the centre of this universe, And all that it was meant to be, So that we might learn to see this foolishness, that lives in us, And stupidity that we must suss, How to banish from our minds, If you call this living I must be blind.

the comic makes as much scientific sense as the the string theory itself =)

String theory is a joke. I, and many other physicists would really much prefer it, if it would just go away

My God! And I thought the holocaust cartoon was bad! Every pixel of this one transpires scientific ignorance! I think you'd do better if you try NOT to imitate xkcd ;) --btw, Eric, you're the joke. When one does not understand the details of a theory, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is wrong... in fact, in your case, I'm certain you can't even grasp what 'wrong' even means in my sentence. ;-)

Try "The Elegant Universe". It's a bit out-dated, but a worthy attempt at explaining String theory with allegory and metaphor.

Actually, you're all rather wrong about string theory. It doesn't predict that there is an infinite number of you(s), but that there are an infinite number of possible you(s). Also, most physicists/cosmologists actually support further research in string theory, not the other way round. Finally, string theory makes very clear many things which would remain otherwise undefined. String theory elegantly and neatly combines all theories into one - something that has been pursued by science since its very beginning.

There is no "center" of the universe, at least in the traditional sense. The universe expands at the same speed from every point in all directions. In time, this will reverse, but the same principle holds true. There is no precise center of the universe to contract to.
