Kitty: You know how pencils are kinda long and not sharpened when they are new? And how they are kinda short when they've been used for a while? Well, the baby boy is that new pencil. Actually I think the old pencils should have bitemarks in them. Who has a pencil without bitemarks?

It's funny because pencils get smaller the more they are used.
I get the joke, I just find it appallingly unfunny.
This comic seems to be pretty hit-and-miss. Going to bookmark and hope the future brings more hit than miss :) Love the artsy "existential" ones.

It's a beautiful baby boy because they all start with 'b'! It just rolls off the tongue more easily than 'beautiful baby girl' or 'beautiful baby what-the-hell-is-that', don't you think?

the fact that it's a boy is irrelevant to the funny.
He could have stopped at "oh what a beautiful baby" but decided to let you know the sex. It is not central to the punch line.
To the people commenting: why does the gender matter, and how does this have anything to do with abortion?

@ Chris Ellis, tree and graphite wouldn't work cuz pencils do not become that as they get older. The grandparents would just be like erasers
